Happy Tuesday everyone! Johnathon is off to Honolulu tomorrow, so Hadley and I will be having ourselves a girls week 'o fun! But also, I will be counting down the days to his return, because single parenting is exhausting!
Today, Deanna is sharing all about her new favorite cooking ingredient: Mushrooms!
Hi, I'm Deanna! I'm a wife to an amazing husband and mommy to our adventurous 2 year old son, Matthew. I live for family, nutrition & fitness, and of course a good book- especially the kind that help me make delicious food! I have a BS in Health Science, I became a Beachbody coach in June 2015, and am currently working on my Holistic Nutrition degree!
Today I'm talking about my new favorite cooking ingredient: Mushrooms!
The magical, amazing, cancer-butt-kicking food we should all be eating DAILY! I’d be lying if I said I love mushrooms. But I am, however, scarfing my face with them because of their amazing healing and cancer fighting benefits. Seriously, just one small brown button or baby Portabello mushroom is all you need for a daily dose- 10g! But there are some other amazing varieties to try, too.
Fun Facts:
- That one little mushroom I told you about, can decrease your risk for breast cancer by 64%!! One a day people! The “new” and improved multivitamin lol…. JK you still should take a good multivitamin & probiotics daily.
- When eaten daily along with leafy greens and green tea, it decreases the breast cancer risk by 89%!!!
- It inhibits Angiogenesis (process of blood vessel growth so cancer can nestle up nice and cozy and begin its process). And when we have more fat, our bodies INCREASE that process! Not good. MUSHROOMS GOOD, EXCESS FAT BAD.
Ways to eat them:
- I love to cut a baby Portabello and eat it raw because it has that crisp and mild mush room taste. I’m not a fan of the rubber-y texture, although I will eat it.
- Chop it up and add it into pastas, pizza sauces, stir fry… get creative, but add it in!
- You can simmer it in a pot of water (don’t boil) to create a broth and use it in your soups, or even smoothies and Shakeology as the water base!
-Currently, my favorite way to add mushrooms into my diet is by sauteing some mushrooms and spinach together, and sprinkling the mixture on top of my egg and toast with a little Feta cheese! It's such an easy way to work those bad boys into your diet, and a yummy start to your day!
Happy eating!
Confession - I've never tried a mushroom. I mean, not knowingly. I know they're sometimes cooked into things, but those are easily disguised. :)
