Weekend Recap: Valentine's Day, Sweetheart Relay, and Pizza Night

We had a wonderful Valentine's Day weekend that was made even better by Johnathon having President's Day off of work! We got the fun started Friday afternoon when Aksel had Hadley and Maya over to his house to play in the water table. Hadley loves the water table, but her distract-ability is at an all time high right now, and she will usually splash for a couple of minutes then crawl off to explore something new. For this reason I didn't change her into a swimsuit because getting her to lay still enough to change outfits is a struggle unto itself. I figured she could just go in her clothes, and change after if she got wet...

Needless to say a change of clothes was definitely in order! The water table was a huge success (Aksel even climbed into it!). Hadley still managed to get distracted by the sprinkler in the side yard, but her exploring eventually led to Hadley and Aksel enjoying the first of many sprinkler encounters! ;)

Friday evening, Johnathon was on dad duty while I went to my first ever hula class. My first year on island, I didn't hear about the hula class until it was too late to join, and last year I was off island having Hadley, so this is my first year to do it! I was really excited for it, but I'm not gonna lie...the thought of being in the hula show that gets put on for the whole island in April has me a little concerned. I have it on good authority though, that margarita's do get consumed prior to performing, so I'm really counting on that to be true! I didn't bring my camera to the first practice, but Angela snapped these gems for me:

We had to walk around the room in lines practicing our foot work and hip action ;)

The next day was Valentine's Day, and we started off the day like all great couple's do...with a thorough, deep clean of the kitchen. Someone get Danielle Steele on the phone...she needs to be taking notes! We had a lazy afternoon, and then headed to the store to get stuff for a yummy Valentine's Day dinner only to discover that THE STORE WAS CLOSED ON A SUNDAY FOR PRESIDENTS DAY. What?! A quick survey of the food in my fridge told me that I had one frozen bag of shrimp, a box of instant mashed potatoes, and some chocolate chips. So I set out begging friends for the necessary supplies to McGyver my food options into an edible, romantic dinner! The end result was bacon wrapped shrimp in a chili butter sauce (I used this recipe from Pioneer Woman and just switched scallops for shrimp), mashed potatoes, green beans, and Pizookie for dessert! Fortunately, I had the forethought to grab some champagne ahead of time so the evening was saved, and still turned out delicious!

All my favorite people chowing down on some Valentines Day goodness

We had our real dinner after we put Hadley to bed, and ended our Valentine's with some champagne on our patio. It was a simple and perfect Valentine's which is just how we like it!

Love this guy so very much!

It's probably a good thing our Valentine's was a low key one, because Johnathon was up bright and early to run in the Sweetheart Relay. Each relay team had four members and they each had to run one mile increments. Time handicaps were also given out according to age. Because of Johnathon's age and gender, he ended up having the smallest time handicap of 5 seconds which didn't help his team's overall time that much, but all four members of the team finished with a strong showing! Good work guys!

Johnathon, Eric, Jeff, and Wes. Great running guys!

I was super proud of Johnathon and his teammates, but hands down the best part of the relay was watching the team of four year old's run the race. Is anyone else as impressed as I am that a group of four year old's each ran a mile?! One of them ran an 11 minute mile, and I'm fairly certain I have run a slower mile than that. They're team name was, "May the Fours Be With You" and I don't think I have seen anything cuter in my life:

Our friend Shelbi's daughter Molli was one of the runners...run, Molli, run!

The four year old group were the last to finish the relay, and everyone was so proud, a bunch of the other kids and adults who already ran in the relay went back and finished the last quarter mile with the anchor runner, Ember!

All of Ember's teammates were cheering her on right in front of the finish line, and she was so excited that she stopped about ten feet short of the finish, but she crossed eventually after lots of high fives and hugs were given out! Seriously, the sweetest thing I've seen in awhile!

We finished off the day with a BBQ on the beach to celebrate our friend Rich's birthday and the arrival of our friend Angela's parents!

Hadley loved the BBQ because it meant she got to swing on her favorite swings.

Which she prefers to do with her entourage around to keep her entertained...

It's a shame nobody ever pays her any attention :)

The next day was President's Day, and we pretty much relaxed and hung around the house, and helped Hadley power through a rough day of teething. She slept until 9:30am, was up for an hour and a half, then took a three hour nap so we knew she was feeling pretty punny. We had a BYOP (bring your own pizza) night planned out at the country club, but Johnathon took one for the team, and stayed home with the baby since she was feeling so bad. I on the other hand, got to enjoy a bunch of delicious homemade pizzas and some great company with friends!

It all looked so good I couldn't choose!

Angela's dessert pizza was the bomb!

The second our friend Shelbi walked in the party, I immediately started fangirling over her shoes. Tell me they aren't the cutest shoes you've ever seen?!

Sorry my pics are blurry...the lighting was terrible!

I mean...they're a bootie...they're a mule. They're a mutie! I'm pretty much obsessed with them, and think they would be a great transition shoe for Spring when it's getting too warm for boots, but your not sure if you can wear wedges yet. Enter the Mutie! Shelbi said she got them from a boutique in Alabama, but I'm going on a quest to find me a pair!

And that's our weekend! I tried to get a cute Valentine's day picture of Hadley, but due to her teething she was fairly uncooperative. I will however leave you with the couple that I did manage to snag!

  1. Yay for President’s Day and Johnathon having the day off. The sprinkler pictures are adorable. I remember days of playing out in the sprinklers. A hula class sounds fun. I am in love with those fringe booties. Let me know if you find them anywhere. Sweet pictures of your little miss!
