Weekend Recap: Jeff's Visit to Kwaj

Hope everyone is having a great week! We are still enjoying our friend Jeff's visit to Kwaj. It has been one busy, adventurous, fun week, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

I have so much to share with y'all about Jeff's visit, so I will break it down and recap his first couple of days on Kwaj today, and the last half I will recap tomorrow!

Jeff landed on Kwaj around lunchtime on Saturday (Friday for those back stateside). After picking him up from the airport all three of us took Jeff on a golf cart tour of Kwaj. It's always fun when new visitors come because they are always so excited about things that we now take for granted....(PALM TREES!!! THE WATER IS SO CLEAR!! THIS ISLAND IS INCREDIBLY TINY!!). We showed Jeff all the usual stops, and even got to go on top of Telemetry Hill which I had never gotten to go up before! It's the highest point on the island, and it was fun to get a birds eye view of the ocean and Kwaj!

Best friends reunited at last! We're so glad you're here Jeff!

Hadley LOVES golf cart rides, and was owning her roll as unofficial tour guide...

The boys then went snorkeling while Hadley took a nap! It was a full moon this past weekend, and I have it on good authority that a full moon means prime lobster hunting conditions! So Johnathon, Jeff and a few of our friends made their way out to the tide pools:

a good view of the tide pools all along the right side of the island

Essentially the boys go out around 10:30 at night with snorkel gear and dive lights, and jump in the tide pools at low tide, and try and catch these disgusting looking cockroaches lobsters. Sounds like a great time right?! I watched them do it once, and decided that snorkeling in dark water while trying to catch nasty crustaceans does not a good time make (in my mind) so I stayed home! The good news is that they ended up catching two slipper lobsters, and what the lobsters lack in physical beauty they more than make up for in the savory department!

Told ya they're nasty looking!

Asked them for a picture with their lobsters and this is what I got...

The next day the boys went fishing, and came back with some Mahi and Ono. They also got to see a pod of Pilot Whales which I was super jealous of!

That evening Johnathon, Jeff, and most of our guy friends took part in yet another Beer Mile! You can read about Johnathon's first Beer Mile experience and the rules of the run here. I'm gonna go ahead and say that Johnathon did better than last time...I gauging this on the fact that he was able to chug the last beer in an adequate amount of time, and finished the run with a thumbs up...

Jeff was a little less enthusiastic here because he had one more lap to go!

I think Jeff found the run slightly less enjoyable, but he finished strong and only had to take one penalty lap!! ;)

On Monday Johnathon took Jeff snorkeling, and we finished out the evening with a shrimp boil with our "Texas Group."

A little side story for you. During our annual White Elephant gift exchange, poor Jane had her gifts stolen more times than I can count, and ended up with this ridiculous awesome laser eye, rainbow cat shirt! We all thought it was pretty funny, and I think we all assumed we would never see the shirt again, but...oh no...Jane has worn that bad boy all over the place! The night of the shrimp boil, the cat shirt appeared alongside Jane's Halloween wine glass! This is why I love me some Jane Erekson!

Just try and take in all the awesomeness going on here!

Gang's all here!

Apparently, Jeff got the memo about the cat motif going on at the party. Grrr!

Johnathon was kind enough to oblige my request for a couple's pic!

And for those of you still thawing out from last week's snowstorm, or if you are just dreaming of warmer weather...here is a pretty clip of one of the islands on the atoll that Johnathon captured while fishing!

  1. What a fun visit thus far! :) And more fun in store. I didn't realize a Mahi Mahi was such a pretty fish. Also, I too, would have sat out during the lobster hunting expedition. ;)
